The concept of “digital native” has once again gained attention after the rise of NFTs. The development of digital natives has roughly gone through stages such as the first generation of digital natives, digital native companies, digital native art, and digital native assets, culminating in the emergence of native metaverses. This process can be overwhelming and difficult to keep up with. Most of these stages are still conceptual, with many discussions based on movies and science fiction novels.

To understand and grasp digital natives and metaverses, we must first understand what data is. Our current understanding of data is still in its early stages, as data can be easily copied, difficult to trace, and challenging to distinguish deep fakes of faces, photos, videos, and signatures. There is still a lot of foundational work to be done in building a metaverse based on data, including a deeper understanding of data itself, such as understanding the differences between fungible and non-fungible information.

Therefore, here we will focus on the field of digital native art in the hopes of facilitating thorough discussions. It is evident that the findings of digital native art research can be extended to all aspects of digital natives. Our main topic is the transition from formal digital art to native digital art, with a larger question being the shift from formal data to native data. After fully understanding data in the art field, we will be closer to understanding digital natives in other fields, or the digital natives of all things and their collective — the metaverse.

to be continued…
